My mom has a 40mm and I have a 44mm, but if I had to buy a new one myself I honestly think I'd just go with the 40mm. The difference between the bands will be the width of the connector. The 38/40mm watch bodies have a smaller width therefore the connector portion of the bands are smaller as well. Since the body of the 42/44mm watch is bigger, then the connectors will be bigger as well.
